As I mentioned in Part 1 of this post yesterday, I’ve embarked on a process of shooting a-roll-a-day of film (on average) to give myself a creative kick in the pants. Here are my color shots from most recent film shot and developed over the past month.

I’ve found committing to this sort of general process-focused framework can really open up some unexpected new directions in my work. The last time I did something like this was back around 2011, when I set out to photograph “a-stranger-a-day” — which ultimately evolved into my 10-year-long North Portland Polaroids project.

I had thought to start back with the same framework now, shooting at least one stranger, or maybe at least one portrait every day, but I decided to begin with the broader “roll-a-day” agenda first. But I have been consciously trying to shoot more portraits too.

One portrait-related process that you’ll probably see me playing with more in the future is at the bottom of this post. I recently purchased a Lomography Instax Wide instant film back for my 4x5 camera, so that I could have a way to continue to offer an instant print to strangers as a way to entice them to let me photograph them.

The first 2 of the 3 Instax prints at the bottom of this post were tests, shooting my friends (and fellow photographers) Steve B. and Keith Z. with my 4x5 camera. (The final image is also an Instax self-portrait, but shot with the standard Fuji Instax Wide camera, not my 4x5).

The other shots are all on 35mm film, shot with either my Leica, or my Nikon FM. I’m continuing to use the Nikon to play around with doing multiple explosures (you can see a couple examples toward the bottom).
